Happy Memorial Day
In prior years, Memorial Day has been pretty much a day off and an excuse to have some barbeque. Given my upcoming employment change, this year seems to have much more meaning for me. Think about the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines in your lives today, and if you see someone that you know served, thank them for their service. We may not always agree with the wars, but we should always support our troops.
Given that this journal is an international readership, I know a couple of you don't celebrate Memorial Day, at least not specifically on this day. To you, well... have a great day! ;)

I still hope, though, that someday a little child will look up and ask, "Grandma, what's a 'veteran'?" (Someday.)

"Well, child, a veteran is someone who stood up for what was right and protected the ideals of freedom and equality for all. You see, it wasn't always that those things were truly guaranteed for everyone... happily those things don't need to be defended anymore because no one attacks them. But we should never forget the lesson in that: that just because something is taken for granted today doesn't mean that it truly is granted for free, and so we should appreciate and be thankful for every moment of those freedoms that we have, and for the people that worked so hard to make sure that things are the way they are today."

although i still hope that someday - probably in the far, far distant future - we'll have stopped needing to fight amongst ourselves, and figured out better ways to use our time and energy.
