First, something intriguing and odd, but kind of cool too: real life superheroes. It's nice to know people are out there acting as, as one of them puts it, 'walking anti-crime billboards'.

i'm not sure i like the idea of "annoying" a cat until it meows in protest, just to make funny noises...

It was strange enough to say 'WTF?' to... other than the cat with the duct tape on his paws I didn't notice any that were ready to kill someone.

I suppose the fact that both crime, and the number of 'citizen heroes' as I've heard them called elsewhere, are on the rise...kinda indicates both a worsening economic situation and a basic distrust in the police's ability to do their job, really.

It's cool that people, strange as they may be, are stepping up to fill the gaps. But it's disturbing that they need to.

Having said all that ... I wonder if anyone is fulfilling the role of providing crime fighting gadgets? I can't see myself as a superhero, but the back-room tech-head that builds signature weapons/gadgets, that'd be a sweet gig!

Indeed it would be a sweet gig. And it is definitely disturbing that they need to fill those gaps. My understanding from the article is more that they're acting as a strangely dressed neighborhood watch patrol (walking the streets) than vigilantes... they wait for the cops, follow proper citizen's arrest laws, etc.
